In today's world, we are constantly pulled in different directions by endless distractions. We're bombarded with phone calls, text messages, and social media updates. From the moment we wake up, many of us find ourselves compulsively scrolling through our never-ending feeds. Our days are filled with a myriad of interactions—conversations with friends, romantic partners, family members, co-workers, and casual encounters. This relentless influx of sensory input and social engagement can lead to sensory overload for many of us.
Relationships, whether romantic or familial, bring their own set of challenges, and the workplace can, for many, be an enormous source of stress, frustration and anxiety with difficult employers, co-workers, customers, clients, or patients. The pressure of meeting deadlines adds to our stress. As people have become less accountable, flakier, not returning phone calls, not showing up for dates and ghosting have become more commonplace.
Burdened with financial worries, such as paying off credit card and student loan debt, rent or mortgages, medical bills, and other living expenses, some of us feel as though we are swimming as fast and hard as we can just to keep our heads above water. It can take everything we have just to make it from one month to the next.
In addition to the events that directly impact us, numerous developments taking place in the world around us also affect our lives. These include fluctuations in the economy, inflation, a toxic, highly charged, hyper-partisan political environment largely fed by a profit-driven clickbait media, rampant disinformation and rightwing culture wars. Also impacting us are wars such as those currently happening in places like Ukraine, Israel-Palestine, and Myanmar.
Seeking tranquility and clarity
Living in our modern-day world poses a significant challenge for anyone seeking a moment of tranquility and clarity. When many of us attempt to meditate, we do so with the intention of quieting our minds by bypassing the internal noise, hoping it will simply fade away. And yet it doesn't quite work that way.
We spend our lives in our thoughts, and so much of our awareness is either up in our heads or drawn outside of ourselves—to our smartphones, the latest social media or news updates, and other dramas playing out in our immediate environment and on the national and global stage that capture our attention.
Many of us are scarcely aware, if not completely oblivious, to our own emotional and physiological responses. Our emotions and bodily sensations occur largely outside of our conscious awareness. But the stress of the workday and the upsetting emotions that arise in response to unpleasant interactions that we fail to process never just go away. They remain trapped within our bodies, where they continue to accumulate with every passing day. Much of the population, lacking awareness, understanding and resources, are not processing the stresses of daily life and their own emotional responses and therefore accumulate enormous amounts of stagnation in their bodies.
These stresses and unprocessed emotions create layer upon layer of stagnant emotional residue. As that happens, the deep core of our being gets buried underneath it all. As these layers of stress and unprocessed emotion accumulate, we start losing touch with our inner core. We become more ungrounded and disconnected from our source. We either lose touch with or fail to develop many of the crucial resources needed to realize our true potential and fulfill our life's purpose.
The Stress of Daily Life
It's important for you to be making time on a daily basis to check in by fully immersing your awareness within your body. Start by sitting comfortably, close your eyes and bring as much attention as you can to the feelings and sensations that are occurring within your immediate internal landscape.
How are you feeling in your body in the present moment? Do you feel as though your focus is scattered or that you're being pulled in multiple directions? Are you feeling fatigued, or does your body feel depleted?
There's a whole spectrum of emotions operating beneath the surface, some pleasant and others not so much. The emotions that you're experiencing in the present moment exist within your conscious waking awareness, while others operate outside of your immediate awareness, residing in the subconscious mind. As you continue to work with this practice, many of the emotions held within the subconscious will be making their way into consciousness.
As you bring your full attention to your body in the present moment, are you feeling upset, anxious, unsettled, uncertain, insecure, hurt, angry, or confused? Or are you feeling relatively calm, at ease and or a sense of anticipation for something you're looking forward to? Is your body feeling tense and agitated or comfortable and relaxed?
Allow any feelings, bodily sensations or impressions of your day to make their way into your awareness and then feel how they're impacting your body. Breathe softly and deeply while fully immersing yourself in any feelings or bodily sensations that arise. Stay with these feelings and sensations, allowing yourself to fully experience them. Follow these feelings and sensations, allowing yourself to go wherever they take you.
Your mind will wander at times. Whenever you find yourself getting too caught up in your thoughts, bring your awareness back down to the feelings and sensations you're experiencing within your body. You're not going to stop all thought, as your mind will still be engaged in its mental processing, but do your best to keep as much awareness as you can centered within your feelings and bodily sensations.
Taking time to do this practice daily will help you to keep up with everything that is happening in your life and your subsequent emotional responses while simultaneously deepening your connection to your internal world. It will enable you to remain more connected to your core being as you go about your day-to-day life and as you move about in the world. The more you work with this practice, the stronger the connection to your core will become.
A Much Deeper Level of Processing
People often find themselves trapped in a cycle of overthinking from an overactive conscious, intellectual mind, which has its limitations. This often leads to ruminating on problems without finding solutions, leaving them feeling stuck. However, engaging in this practice activates the body-mind's innate healing intelligence, enabling a much deeper level of processing. This approach goes beyond the confines of the intellectual mind, tapping into a more profound and intuitive understanding that facilitates healing and problem-solving.
Becoming more fully present by breathing into the full range of feelings and bodily sensations that arise in response to the events of your daily life, including the many challenges you face and conversations and other interactions, is a critically important part of digesting your life experiences and your subsequent emotional responses. This practice will provide you with the much-needed insights that will enable you to resolve conflicts and come up with creative, workable solutions.
In this deeper level of processing, you can more effectively navigate through stress, unpleasant emotions, frustrations, and feelings of confusion and uncertainty. Rather than being mired in indecision, this practice helps you gain clarity about exactly what you need to say and the actions you need to be taking. By connecting with your body-mind's innate healing intelligence, you tap into much-needed guidance that often isn't accessible through logical thinking alone. This connection leads to decision-making that is clearer, more insightful, more intuitive, and ultimately more effective.
Not only does this practice better equip you to resolve conflicts, but it also enables you to learn the valuable lessons your life experiences have to offer, facilitating growth and evolution. In fact, the more you engage in this practice, the stronger your inner core becomes. As this happens, you may sometimes feel this presence flowing through your body and even emanating from within you.
It's essential to take time every day to check in with yourself. If you don't take time to be present and engage with your body and mind's innate healing intelligence to do the deep-level processing, the stresses and emotions you're not digesting will keep accumulating within your body. The stresses that pile up then contribute to your sense of overwhelm. Making time for this practice on a daily basis ensures that these stresses do not take control, allowing you to maintain balance and presence in your life.
Engaging in deep internal work through this practice is a crucial aspect of your healing journey. It's important to remember that while you will gain valuable insights and inspiration, the responsibility ultimately lies with you to identify the goals and objectives you wish to accomplish. Following through by taking constructive action in your daily life is key to making these insights meaningful and effective.
For Maximum Results, Combine with the Most Effective Therapeutic Interventions
Working with this practice greatly increases your “processing capacity” and is a critically important part of digesting the stresses and emotions that arise in response to the challenges of daily life. Consistent daily practice will help you to digest much, but not all of the stresses and emotions that would otherwise accumulate in your body.
I find that I get the best results by combining this meditation practice with the most effective therapeutic interventions. Although I do this practice every day, I have significant amounts of additional stress and highly charged issues and emotions that have yet to be processed that emerge whenever do deep tissue body work and when I go on the vision quest.
I also encourage you to make use of the most effective therapeutic interventions. Whether you choose to work with a psychotherapist, receive deep tissue bodywork, soak in sensory deprivation flotation tanks, or work with a gifted healer like myself, combining intensive daily practice with these therapeutic interventions will get you much greater results.
